Measurement and New Math Stations

We are learning how to measure!!!

We learned two important words:
-Measure
-Length-How long or short something is?

We talked about why we need to know how to measure.
-It helps us to know how long or short something is.
-Measurement helps us to know if something will find or not.
We applied it to our shoes...
How do we find out if they will fit our feet?
We have to measure!

So, we practiced measuring our shoes and comparing
our shoe measurements to a friend's.

Since we are in Kindergarten, we don't typically use rulers yet.
However, we can use different non-standard items,
like cubes or paperclips, to help us measure.

Check out our measurement activities.

We traced our feet.

We traced our friend's foot too.

Then, we used cubes to measure our feet and compare it to our friend's.

We practiced measuring from different points using different objects too.

NEW Math Stations:

We added the game Trouble to our math stations.
So fun!

How about some Cowboy Math?!?!
We are using beans to estimate and check.
We estimate how many beans it will take to cover the different pictures.
We cover it and then we count to check.
See if your estimation was right!!!

T-E-X-A-S!

It was all about TEXAS this week!

We learned how to use a map and globe.
We discussed and practiced finding our planet, continent,
country, state, and city using a map and globe.

My students ROCK at finding locations!

Check out our little "maps" we created.

Then, we learned about our great state-TEXAS!
We explored Texas symbols- like the flag.
Check out our flags and Texas-shaped circle map.

More Poetry!!!

Check out our poems about Pumpkins!

Writing Poems!

Last week, we began reading and writing poems.
We learned about poets and
how they begin their writing process.

Then, we started our very own poems.
We picked an object- puddles.
Using our senses, we brainstormed our ideas
 about puddles on bubble maps.
We used descriptive words to help us describe a puddle.

We brainstormed different things we can do in a puddle.

We talked about how poets include how something makes them feel
in their poems.

I've got some great poets in my classroom!
Check out some of our poems.

Inference Investigators

Inferring Investigation
On Thursday, we read a story called Snow Day.
We used our schemas and experiences to come up with
different snow day activities. This would later help
us on our inferring investigation.

Next, we read a story about a little boy named Tim and his
Grandmother Sue. Tim woke up one morning and saw snow on the ground.
He listened to the TV and found out that there will be no school!
Every kid's dream...right! :)

So, he spent the day with his Grandma Sue while his mother
went to work. When his mother returned home that afternoon,
she did not see Tim or his grandma. She did find some "clues" into
what they did during the day though. She wrote use a letter to ask us for help.
We put on our investigating hats and away we went...

We activated our prior knowledge about snow days.

The letter from Tim's mom

The clues Tim's mother found...

We worked in pairs to try to figure out what they did on the snow day.

Here are some of our thoughts and ideas...

We designed a schedule of our ideas for the day based on the clues
we received from Tim's mother.
