So Far, So GOOD!!!

We have been super
busy this week!

Making connections to a piece of literature
We have discussed what it means to be a good reader and find something in our stories that we can relate to. Our class is learning that a "connection" or "link" would be something that we hear or see in the story that reminds us of something that has happened in our lives. This week, we are learning all kinds of things about Johnny Appleseed. We decided to make a connection chart to show some of our thoughts about how we can relate to him.

Check out our chart:

Our class is really doing a great job of coming up with things that they can relate to in the story! We are going to continue to work on this concept as good readers.

Writing
Also, we have been making different circle maps about different types of settings and events that we could use to enhance our writing.

Here are a few of our setting circle maps:

Inside Settings

Outside Settings
***Parents--please begin writing with your child at home. They are really learning so much this year about being a good writer. Let them share some of their characters, settings, and events with you at home when they write!

Math

During our math lessons, we are exploring measurement. We are using a special tool in our classroom to measure by---10 unfix cubes connected together. It is our "ruler!" The kids are so excited to be learning measurement because we know that our parents and some adults use measurement in their everyday jobs!

Therefore, we are measuring all around our room. We started by measuring different objects to see if they were shorter or longer than our 10 cube tower. Then, we explored different items on our table to see if they were the same length as our tower. Here are some photos from our measuring exploration:

Our Week--9/5-9/9

We had a great week!

Here is the scoop...

Language Arts:

Our poem this week: Orange
Sight words: Orange, a
Concept: Retelling a story
Some of our books: Caps for Sale, Little Blue and Little Yellow, Brown Bear, Brown Bear--just to name a few!

Some of our projects: We made caps of red, brown, gray, and blue to help us retell the story, Caps for Sale. We learned that yellow and blue mixed together make green.  The story of Little Blue and Little Yellow taught us that! Lastly, we made a color chain to represent each animal in Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear story.

We begin writing in our journals and learning about characters, settings, and events.

Some of our centers included: Writing Center, Library Nook, Name Nook, and Computers.

I hope you got a chance to listen to your child retell you a story they enjoyed from this week! Very fun!

Math:

In Math, we reviewed counting and creating sets or collections. Also, we started talking about sorting. We sorted ourselves by hair color, outfits and clothes, and by boy/girl. We created different representations of the number 6 and placed it in our counting jar. (Pictures to come)

Our Math Workshop time included exploring counting and sorting games. In addition, we started workshop stations around the room.

Science:

On Tuesday, we read and began discussing our 5 senses and how we use each sense. We learned that sometimes we are using more than one sense at a time.

On Thursday, we did a taste testing experiment with different items like:
M&M  for our sweet tooth!
Pretzels for a salty snack!
Sour Patch Kids for something sour!

It was YUMMY!

Today, our class explored the sense of hearing. We joined Ms. K's class to experiment with different sounds. Check your child's red folder to find out our predictions and the outcomes recorded on their recording sheet.

Lastly, on Wednesday, we did go to the library to check out books! It was so exciting to find a book and check it out! Enjoy reading those at home! Just make sure you bring it back by this next Wednesday!

Have a great weekend! Enjoy our Smilebox of photos!

Dot Stickers

Parents,

I need some help!
If you ever run across some of the circle,
dot stickers used for color coding in the colors:
Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow...I need some for our guided reading folders.

I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find them in those specific colors!

I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

P.S. I have the "bright" colored ones from Wal-mart already that I used for coding.
