Pumpkin Fun!

We have had a blast the last two weeks!
It's been all about PUMPKINS!!!
Check out some of our projects!

We read Pumpkin, Pumpkin by Jeane Titherington.
Then, we retold the story and changed the ending.
Instead of the character, Jamie, picking the pumpkin...
we replaced his name with our name!
The pumpkin grew, and grew, and grew, until KEIRA picked it!
In science, we began our KWL chart on pumpkins.
What we know, what we want to know, and what we learned (KWL)

We will complete this on Friday--listing the
 things we learned about pumpkins.
Our scrapbook paper pumpkins are on display in our hallway.
Very cute!

Here is our circle map that describes pumpkins.
On Tuesday, we did a writing activity where we
found a picture in a magazine that we
had some type of connection to.
Then, we cut the picture out and pasted it in our journals.
Our objective was to come up with a sentence
 that would describe what is
happening in our magazine picture.
After we wrote, we shared our writing with a friend.
Our class did an amazing job on our writing pieces.
Also, we created a picture of the
different parts of the pumpkin plant.
We labeled each part.
Here is Trystin with her plant part picture.
During pumpkin rotation on Monday,
we mixed pumpkin bread batter to bake.
Mrs. Shelby cooked the batter and we ate
pumpkin bread on Tuesday.
Jacob liked the pumpkin bread!
Paige enjoyed it too!
20 little thumbs up for pumpkin bread!!!

A Few Extras!

Here are a few extra photos from this week!

We are working on main idea skills while we read and write.
This is a circle map of different items that belong with the main idea--"school."
The question mark stands for the unknown main idea.
The class had to come up the main idea for all of the pictures.

They did AWESOME!
Right on it!
School was our main idea!

Here is another wonderful writing piece from Our Apple Pie Tree project.

They were so excited to make applesauce on Friday!

We read the story, "A Little Red House.
The story was about a little boy who goes on a journey
looking for a little, red house with NO doors,
NO windows, and a STAR inside.
He travels to many places and visits with many people asking about this "house."
Then, he finds the little, red house....it is an apple!

We learned that an apple has a STAR on the inside!
SO COOL!!!

Apples, Apples All Around!

What an exciting week in Kindergarten!

Math and Science with APPLES!

During our apple unit, we have enjoyed doing some
fun lessons and activities!

Here are a few of our math
and science apple activities:

Our math lessons have been centered around measurement.
Shorter and longer are two of our measurement words.

In relation to measurement, we listened to
the story, Rumpelstiltskin.

Afterwards, we predicted how many letters
we thought were in his name.
We wrote down our predictions and
then counted to find out.
There are 14 letters in his name! WOW!

We have been comparing our names all week to
see who has the longest and shortest names in our classroom.

In science, we measured our apples using cubes.

Check out Cherlin's apple. It is 3 cubes tall.

Hayden is measuring his apple.

During math, we played "Spin an Apple."
After we spun, we graphed which color apple we landed on.

We love building graphs!

Here is Connor measuring his apple during science.

We practiced writing our numbers from 1-20 during math too!

Here is my yellow table friends playing a math card game
and working on fall number puzzles.

Justin and Kellen are measuring their apples and
recording their findings in their apple report book.

We can't wait for tomorrow!
More photos to come!
It's going to be a blast!

So Far, So GOOD!!!

We have been super
busy this week!

Making connections to a piece of literature
We have discussed what it means to be a good reader and find something in our stories that we can relate to. Our class is learning that a "connection" or "link" would be something that we hear or see in the story that reminds us of something that has happened in our lives. This week, we are learning all kinds of things about Johnny Appleseed. We decided to make a connection chart to show some of our thoughts about how we can relate to him.

Check out our chart:

Our class is really doing a great job of coming up with things that they can relate to in the story! We are going to continue to work on this concept as good readers.

Writing
Also, we have been making different circle maps about different types of settings and events that we could use to enhance our writing.

Here are a few of our setting circle maps:

Inside Settings

Outside Settings
***Parents--please begin writing with your child at home. They are really learning so much this year about being a good writer. Let them share some of their characters, settings, and events with you at home when they write!

Math

During our math lessons, we are exploring measurement. We are using a special tool in our classroom to measure by---10 unfix cubes connected together. It is our "ruler!" The kids are so excited to be learning measurement because we know that our parents and some adults use measurement in their everyday jobs!

Therefore, we are measuring all around our room. We started by measuring different objects to see if they were shorter or longer than our 10 cube tower. Then, we explored different items on our table to see if they were the same length as our tower. Here are some photos from our measuring exploration:
