Pumpkins and Planting!

It's all about PUMPKINS!!
We are so excited about going to the pumpkin patch next Monday!
We started learning all about pumpkins this week in Science.

Take a look at some of our activities:

We read about pumpkins in A Pumpkin Circle.
Then, we felt a real pumpkin and talked about the lifecycle.

We worked as a group to put the lifecycle in order from seed to adult plant.

We learned that a watermelon does through the same cycle as a pumpkin.

Then, we planted a SEED!
We are monitoring and observing it each day to see if it will grow!

Thank you, Mr. Roberts!!!

A BIG Thank you to Mr. Roberts (Pierson's dad) for coming and visiting with
us about being a Fireman. We ended College Week with a bang!
It was so fun to learn all about being a fireman and watching
him dress up in all of his fire gear!

Thank you for coming Mr. Roberts!!!
You were awesome!!

Thank you!

Story Elements-Characters and a Setting

In Writer's and Reader's Workshop, we discussed how our
stories need and have 3 important things:

-characters
-a setting
-an event

This week, we worked on adding characters to our stories.
Check out two of our anchor charts from this week:

We read a well-known folktale, Little Red Riding Hood.
We practiced finding and drawing the characters and settings
from the story.

More and Less

In Math Workshop, we are working on comparing numbers to 10.
We counted collections and compared them.
We practiced our "math chat" too using words like:
-more than
-less than
-equal to

We played the game of "War" using our more and less skills.
We flipped a number card over and then a more/less
flip tile to see which partner won that set of cards!

Check out our illustrations of these two important math words:

Math Games

We played different math games this week to review
our counting skills and writing numbers.
We enjoyed working with our math
station partners as well!
So fun!

Number Talks: Rekenreks

During our Number Talks, we started using a new tool called a Rekenrek.
My students really enjoyed building, creating, and exploring different
combinations of numbers with this tool. See below more about our math tool.

What is a Rekenrek?

There is perhaps no more important task for primary teachers than to help young children develop powerful understandings of numbers -- their meanings, their relationships to one another, and how we operate with them.

The Rekenrek has recently emerged on the U.S. mathematics education scene as perhaps the most powerful of all manipulative models for young learners.  Developed by mathematics education researchers in the Netherlands (although similar models were used in ancient cultures) the Rekenrek combines various strengths of other manipulatives (e.g., number lines, base-10 blocks, counters, etc.) in one accessible tool.

The Rekenrek is comprised of two strings of ten beads each, strategically broken into two groups: five red beads, and five white beads.  Readily apparent in this model is an implicit invitation for children to think in groups of five and ten.  As illustrated below, the strings of red and white beads (in groups of 5) provide a visual model that encourages young learners to subitize, i.e., to build numbers based on groups of five and ten.

Our American Flag

We learned all about the American Flag last week.
We created a class flag and interactively wrote some
important facts about our flag.

My friends did such a great job!

We are Writers!

We are all WRITERS!
I have been so proud of my little writers.
They are working so hard during Writer's Workshop to
create and write stories.

Below you will find some of our anchor charts about things
we are learning to do as a good writer.

Number Talks

Wow! It's so much fun to talk about numbers!
We used different images to represent numbers.

Scientists and their Tools

In Science, we are learning all about scientists and their tools.
We did a sort on what is safe and what can be hurtful when using tools.
On Friday, we explored and practiced using different science tools

We are Readers!

During Reader's Workshop, we read in our "just-right" spots.
We have our own book boxes and a mat to keep us organized.
I love how my readers are so excited to read each day!

Flexible Seating

Flexible Seating for my Stars!

This year, I wanted to try something different. I wanted my students to feel more at home at school, enjoy their classroom, and have a choice in where/how they learn.
When I heard and researched "flexible seating" I found that this might be one of the best ways to help my students be successful. So, what is flexible seating anyway?

Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.
Since implementing flexible classrooms, research as shown that it:
  • Students seem happier and they are more engaged.
  • It gives them choice in their learning.
  • Students participate more and have more invigorating conversations.
Check out some of the options we started using for flexible seating this last week during Reader's Workshop.
We are using our yoga mats, cushions, pillows, low-top table, chairs, and rugs.

In addition, here are a few links to some great articles about flexible seating if you are interested:
