More on Making Connections

This week, we continued making connections to stories we read.
We talked about Text-to-Self connections.
This is a connection between a book that we read
and our lives, feelings, or experiences.

We marked Text-to-Self connections in our books.

Next, we shared our T-T-S connections with our reading buddies.

We talked about why this part of the story
reminded us of something that we have experienced.

Plants

In Science, we continued our study
of plants and their life-cycles.

After reviewing and seeing the pumpkin life-cycle first hand,
we discussed the parts of a plant and young/parent plants.

We observed a plant's root system.

Then, we discussed what young and adult (parent)
plants look like as they grow and change.

Making Connections

In Reader's Workshop, we are discussing "connections."

-What does it mean to make a connection?
-How are connections made in the world around us?
-How does this relate to me as a reader?

We used dot-to-dots to introduce "connections." The kids LOVED it! We discussed how the lines from one dot to another make connections to help us see and understand what the picture is.  The same thing happens when we read a story. We find pictures, phrases, or clues within a story that remind us of something that has happen to us, a place where we have been, another story we have read, or even things within the world around us.  Wow! We make connections more than we think!

In addition, we played the game Connect 4. We tried to make our game pieces fall just right to make a connection of 4 in a row. Also, we used different physical things to illustrate a connection. We explored velcro, Legos, magnets, puzzle pieces, and much more. We loved making these items connect.

How does this apply to me as a reader? The game board and these physical items are like our brains. The items are the new information that we are learning. Each time we add another piece of information to our schema, we find "connections" that helps us understand. We really enjoyed the visuals that help us understand connections.

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons

Today, we read Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons. The story is a subtraction story about Pete the Cat losing buttons from his coat. Each time one pops off, he sings a groovy song. We used a Pete the Cat work mat and real buttons today to act out the story. Each time one popped off, we took away a button. So fun!

I told the kiddos to take their mats home, act out the story, and sing the groovy song for you.

Spill the Beans

During Math Workshop, we played Spill the Beans.
We enjoyed finding new ways to make the number 5.

Look at all of the different combinations you can spill to get 5.

We recorded our "spills."

There Was an Old Lady...

To practice our predicting skills, we read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves. It is a story about an old lady that swallows some leaves, a shirt, some pants, a pumpkin, and a stick, and so on. At the end, she sneezes--Achoo! We predicted what we thought would happen to all of that stuff she swallowed when she sneezed. Check out our predictions:

Jose predicted that it would turn into a scarecrow.

Titus thought it would turn into a pumpkin.

Liam thought she would eat more stuff. LOVE IT!

My readers were right....all of the "stuff" she swallowed turned into
a scarecrow at the end of the story!
They are soooo good!!!

Here is the YouTube link to listen and watch the story:
